dog_health_checkup.jpgIt is a sad fact of life that we will all grow old one day. Not only will we grow old, but our pets will too. As age slowly creeps in, it is important to make plans so we will be able to care for them when old Father Time comes knocking. As veterinary bills grow more expensive and frequent, it is imperative that you have your loved ones properly insured should disaster strike. The older your pet becomes, the higher the chances of them needing medical attention.
-
As time passes, the more susceptible your pet will become to illness. Their bones become weaker, their general health deteriorates and they are more liable to suffer from strokes or seizures. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease and kidney failure are just some of problems they may face. You will find that their digestive systems are not as robust as they once were, and their joints and limbs are more likely to suffer as the years pass.

-

Many pet insurers will cover your pet as they grow older, but make sure you take your time to find out if there are any loop-holes or discrepancies that you should consider in your policy. For example, some insurers will only cover a pet if it is within a certain age range, whilst others will not accept any pets that have reoccurring illnesses. Every individual insurance company will have their own particular sets of rules and guidelines, so be sure to check up on the cover available to your pet.
 -
Remember, the older the pet, the more probable it will need veterinary treatment as the years pass by. It is for this reason that some pet insurance companies are less willing to provide cover for your pet, being more likely to have to pay out when the inevitable bills come in. Unfortunately, this also means you may find it difficult to find an insurer who will cover your cat or dog if it reaches more than 8 to 10 years old.
-
This may not seem very fair considering you have been paying regular premiums since your pet was young, but insurance is a business, and the cold harsh truth is that an older pet is more of a risk than a viral, healthy young kitten or puppy.
-
If your current insurer doesn’t provide cover for older pets, then you should act now and search for a supplier who will. There are plenty of pet insurance companies out there who don’t operate an age limit, and because some have a period of time that must pass before the policy is up and running, the sooner you can make the change, the better.

dog_excercise.jpgThe secret is in the small print, and you should be careful to read every detail of your pet’s policy when you take it out with your insurer.
Here are a few tips to help care for your dog or cat as they get older...
-
Regular veterinary check-ups – Make sure you visit your local vets at least every six months for a full examination.
-
Vaccinations – As they grow older, so does their immune system, and it is important that you vaccinate your pet against any diseases they may encounter.
-
ben_dog.jpgNutritious diet – A healthy diet makes for a healthy pet, and as time passes, so does their dietary needs. Your vet will be able to recommend the correct diet to suit their needs.
-
Dental care – Gum disease and other problems are more likely to occur in an older dog or cat, so be sure to get regular checkups and keep your pets teeth as clean as possible.
-
Exercise – Whilst their energetic days may long be gone, and whilst they may have slowed down, they will still need exercise. Even a simple walk around the block each day can help battle obesity and keep them in a good condition.
