girl_with_pets.jpgWhen you acquire a new pet, be it a dog or a cat, it is important to make sure they will get along with any existing pets you already own. This will depend greatly on each pet’s separate personalities, and as an owner you should already have an idea if your existing pet is one that will accept newcomers readily in a social situation.
-
Both dogs and cats may view any new additions to the family as a threat, and you should be extra careful when you leave them alone with each other to begin with, as fights may break out as one tries to show the other who is boss in their new partnership. Some pets may be naturally friendly to each other, and some may be naturally aggressive. While you are trying to establish how well they will both get on, you should make sure that they are both supervised when socialising for the first time.
-
Until you are absolutely 100% that they will both get on, you would be wise to keep them both separated when you are not in the same room as them, otherwise you may be putting them both at risk if a fight breaks out. How long it will take until you feel comfortable enough to leave them alone together very much depends upon their own individual temperament. This may take days or even weeks for them to adjust to each other presence.
-
If you own a dog, try and keep it on its lead while you introduce them to a new member of the family. That way, if they do turn aggressive, then you have more of a chance of avoiding a fight as they can be controlled much easily this way. This is especially important if your new pet is a cat as they will be at more risk from harm as inevitably the dog will be the bigger and stringer of the two animals.
-
For cats, you should take care not to hold them in your arms so they cannot escape. Not only will they be prone to biting o scratching you to get away from any situation that they don’t feel comfortable in, but they will also be more nervous if they feel trapped in any way.
-
The main factor in introducing new pets to each other successfully is time. The more time you allow them to get to know each together, the higher the chance that they will get to understand their new companions and the less aggression there will be…
