dog_flea.jpgFleas are a common problem amongst household pets, and they can cause some serious health issues if they are not kept under control. Whilst we always recommend purchasing a solution such as Frontline for your cat or dog, it is important to remember to de-flea the home they live in as well, as they can live in carpets, sofas and bedding.
-

All it takes is for one flea to either jump onto you or your pet, and if unchecked, soon your whole house will become infested with them. A full blown flea infestation is not easy to get rid of, but by following our handy tips, you should manage to eradicate them after a bit of trial and error.
-

At first, you may not even realize your pet has fleas as they tend to scratch themselves naturally, but as soon as you either see one on yourself or your pet, or notice that you have been bitten by them, it is then time to take action, and fast. If you suspect your home has an infestation, the first thing to do is kill the fleas on your pet, and broadly speaking a product called Frontline is the best solution for this. You simply apply it to the back of your pet’s neck (so they cannot lick it off) – you do this by parting their fur and then releasing the contents of the sachet directly onto their skin.
-

You should then spray each room of your house with a flea repellant, taking care to apply the spray to any area where they are likely to live. This includes carpets, bed sheets, sofas and chairs and any rugs that you own. It is important to make sure each room is clear before you do this, as the fumes are toxic and should not be breathed in by you or your pet. You should then leave the room undisturbed for two hours whilst the spray has a chance to take effect on the items in question. Once this is done, you should then make sure the room is thoroughly aired before allowing anyone in to it again.
-

You can also purchase a flea powder, which is sprinkled onto your carpets and bedding, and along the floor. This is then brushed into the surface before you vacuum the room. Many people prefer using this method as it tends to be more environmentally friendly, and there is less risk of inadvertently breathing in any fumes.
-

You should do this as many times as it takes until you have eradicated all of the fleas. The key here is to remember that persistence eventually pays off. Fleas are difficult to control, but if you are vigilant and make sure you apply the flea repellants regularly, then your home will soon be a flea-free zone!
