As a cat owner, you know how much they love to play. It is in their very nature to hunt and chase, and whilst it is not always practical to let them out to fulfill their natural instincts, there are a range of toys they can be purchased that will act as substitutions and keep them occupied.

The favoured prey for cats is birds and smaller animals such as mice. For this reason, look for a toy that most closely resembles the shape and size of these animals. Your local pet shop is full of various toys that will look and sometimes even behave like these creatures, but there are also plenty of cheap alternatives around the home that you can use instead.

1. Straw and string. Dangling string or a straw will keep your cat entranced as your feline hunter leaps up to catch it.
2. Sticks. Likewise with a stick, you can wave a stick in the air for your cat to catch, or along the furniture or floor for it to chase.
3. Crumpled paper. An easily-made ball can be created simply by crumpling up a sheet of paper and throwing it across the room for your cat to run after.
4. Your own hand! A little bit of a surprise recommendation to some maybe, but your hand is the perfect source of entertainment for your cat. Place your hand under a blanket or rug, and then move it around and your cat will love nothing better than to jump onto it for a wrestle. Just make sure you keep an eye out for its teeth and claws…
