Some say it’s just a silly event to make you spend loads of money on unwanted gifts and cards – but I just love Valentines Day. - It’s the one day of the year when dreams can come true, when the person you have been eyeing up at the local store gazes at you just for that split second longer, when you get an anonymous e-card from an admirer or when you get a gift from your partner that just reaffirms their love for you. For pets it’s just the same – ok, well, not exactly the same, but our owners get us a little something to share in their event; because we are the ones they love too. - This made me think about how people often express their love, especially to their pets, through food. Pets need a special diet and thus certain treats that are made for humans are not suitable for us. Chocolate is one such no-no (chocolate made for dogs is fine, it’s the ones made for human consumption were talking about here). - Chocolate contains theobromine which is a naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean and once ingested increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscles. So, in effect, chocolate is like poison for a dog. But what concerns me is the growing problem of overweight pets in the UK. - Amy the rabbit who now tops the scales at 40lb featured in a My Pet Friends news item this week. She isn’t classed as overweight, but in the UK there are many pets who are starting to put on excess weight – along with their owners!!! A few extra pounds isn’t a problem, but it’s when it becomes excessive that health can be affected. - The best way to reduce a pet’s weight and keep us healthy is to give us the correct food that provides a healthy balance of nutrients; and if we need to reduce our weight, reduce our intake of food and increase our levels of exercise. Easier said than done, but if you as our owners and carers ensure that you don’t fall for our sorry looking eyes when we’re begging for scraps from the dinner table (more Teddy than me), you should be able to manage this in no time. - If you need any support or further information, many veterinary centers offer free consultations and advice for owners. - Have a great valentines day everyone. - ![]() {moscomment} |
