I’ve been very concerned about the recent bad press the canine community has been receiving following reports about 5 year old Ellie Lawrensen who was mauled to death by a Type of Pitt Bull Terrier at her grandmother’s house in the early hours of New Years day. - It was a terrible incident and our thoughts and feelings go out to the family, but the incident was a rare one and we must put this into context, especially as the press is reporting more and more incidents of this type. - Only a small percentage of the canine population is classed as a ‘Type of Pitt Bull Terrier’, and most of these dogs remain harmless. The majority of the time an incident occurs if the dog is provoked or trained to be aggressive. - I love children, and children love me. In their eyes I’m like a teddy bear. Children love to hug me and yes, on occasion, pull my tail, but parents always tell them that it’s wrong to do so. My fears are that children will become unnecessarily scared if parents instil fears that stem from these stories into their child’s mind. I’m not saying you should automatically trust any dog that you encounter but I do feel that you should keep an open mind and parents shouldn’t refrain from offering supervised play between pets and their children. - To allay unfounded fears, more education about pet care and control of so called dangerous dogs should take place. Kitty and I hope that you keep an open mind about these incidences and do not prevent your children from playing with pets, but ensure that they are supervised when they do so. - ![]() {moscomment} |
