We all love a good show and that includes the My Pet Friends team who went to the BBC Gardeners World Live show at the weekend. And there was plenty there for pet owners.
-
The show was popular as ever and there was much to see – the bonsai trees, fuchsia displays, designer gardens and the stalls selling plants were just some of the attractions on offer. The team also took time out to see the other two shows that were running at the same time – BBC Good Food Summer Festival, and the BBC Good Homes Live show. They enjoyed it so much and came back with baskets of plants, food and ideas for interiors (Teddy: that’ll mean the paint brushes will be out soon).
-
It was so big that next year they recommend you spend a couple of days there – it’s that big that you just can’t cover the show in just one day.9
-
Do you remember we were talking about plants that were suitable for pets a week or so ago? Well, the team asked plant growers for suggestions of suitable garden plants for pets. It was a bit of an eye opener as we didn’t’ realise so many plants were potentially poisonous. Plants such as lilies are poisonous to cats and if eaten can cause kidney failure. Safer alternatives include Easter orchids, Easter cactus, Easter daisies or violets. For dogs the main plants to avoid are Jasmine Vines as these can cause convulsions and death.
-
Pets, such as dogs and cats, may eat plants because our bodies are telling us that we need more roughage in our food, or because we are just inquisitive. This is especially true of kittens and puppies. So, ensure that you don’t grow these harmful plants in your garden, and supervise their play during their early years.
-
We investigated what other plants were poisonous to pets, and found that there were quite a few. This is such an important issue that we’re writing a Kitty and Teddy Tips page that will list these and provide other tips on safe planting and gardening for pets.
